River North and the Magnificent Mile are where most visitors stay, and plenty of people live here too. The area is full of chains and expense-account steakhouses, but it's also home to some real Chicago classics. These are the ones worth your time.
Chicago classics, all within walking distance

- Lou Malnati's: the deep dish locals will actually defend, with a buttery crust and sauce on top.
- Giordano's on Rush: the towering stuffed pie. It's touristy, but it's the textbook version.
- Portillo's: Chicago's own chain, and the easiest proper hot dog downtown. Add a chocolate cake shake.
- Billy Goat Tavern: the "cheezborger, cheezborger" joint made famous by SNL and the Cubs curse, tucked under Michigan Avenue.
- Garrett Popcorn: the original Chicago mix of caramel and cheddar corn. Expect a line.
